Manisha’s Kitchen: Bharali Wangi – The Vegan Caldereta of India
I called a friend and his mom for breakfast, I guess I was a bit late as they were almost finish. They were at Manisha’s Kitchen in Karama, a Maharashtrian restaurant. It’s sad that I was late to give my regards to my friend’s mom as she was flying back home that day , but I am glad I came to the same place for lunch. Here’s why….
I was curious what Maharashtrian food is so I decided to check Manisha’s Kitchen out for lunch with my friend/food mate. We both don’t know what this place has to offer, as what we always do we asked what is their best seller for curries. Our server suggested Bharali Wangi which is small eggplants stuffed with fresh grated coconut, peanut powder, spice and cooked in a coconut based gravy. Reading the menu’s description, it seems delish. I love anything with peanut flavor in it so this must be made for me. Then we order another dish which I cannot remember the name. I think it’s daal.
Bharali Wangi as what I put in the title is a vegan Caldereta of my mom. Caldereta is a meat stew with peanuts, coconut milk, and tomatoes. Bharali Wangi tastes the same, the curry has a perfect balance of coconut and peanuts. This is a dish where no drop of curry is put to waste.
Bharali Wangi is so thick we wanted to eat something sweet. My friend asked the server what is their dessert that is readily prepared and can be served fast, the server said Shrikhand. The menu’s description is combination of yogurt, sugar, cardamom powder and saffron. It was served in those thali cups, the color looks unreal that it looks like the ice creams you see on cartoons. They did not use any food coloring though, just the saffron. When I scooped on my little cup of shrikhand, oh man! I don’t know how to explain it but it is really a must try. It is something I have never tried before. I can eat a bucket of this. So we ordered another serving. Its like a yakult ice cream but with Indian taste to it… I don’t know why their Shrikhand is not in the must try on it should be there.
